Diamond rings have been the subject of many quotes and references for a few decades. Although we famously remember Marilyn Monroe singing about diamonds and describing them as her best friends, she was just the first in a string of famous people expressing warm feelings about jewelry.

It was the famous writer Marc Twain that was quoted saying: “Let’s not be too particular, it’s better having second hand diamonds than not having diamonds at all”.

Shirley Bassey has even taken it a step further as she was quoted comparing between men and diamonds, saying “men leave you, diamonds never do!”

Apparently, we are much more respectful to the diamond rings that we receive than to the men that gift us with them. This matter can be explained quite easily: diamonds are known as the most solid foundation in the world, as for marriages- we all know that every third marriage ends up in court so perhaps the sympathy towards diamonds in this situation is understandable.
Diamonds are also used as a reference for the benefits of hard work, as George S. Patton explained: “Pressure makes diamonds”.
Ron White however used diamonds for a more chauvinistic purpose when he was quoted saying: “Diamonds – that’ll shut her up… for a minute!”- How inappropriate!

It seems as if diamonds are an important part of our culture for many years now, as they appear in movies, in songs, in metaphors and in famous quotations. Diamonds are no longer just a sign of affection but a simple that represents status and wealth.

Joan Rivers was referring to diamonds in her next quote: “I don’t exercise. If God had wanted me to bend over, he would have put diamonds on the floor”. This quote might explain the special relationship women are having with diamonds.

182.53 Carat ‘Lord Ganesha’ Diamond Idol

In India Hinduism rules the culture and none more than for devout believer Kanubhai Asodaria who is offering prayers directly to a Diamond Idol in the shape of Lord Ganesha.

Asodaria acquired this 182.53 carat rough cut loose diamond over 10 years ago from a dealer in Antwerp, Belgium.

‘‘I had purchased rough stones in bulk. When I was sorting them out at home, I could make out that the biggest stone resembled Lord Ganesha. I decided to preserve it and this is the only stone I have refused to part with all these years,’’ said Asodaria, who runs Karam Exports, a small diamond firm.

Like other diamond traders, he sources roughs from abroad and gets them polished in Surat, India. Though he refuses point blank to get this particular gem polished since he feels it would lose its divine shape and thus significance However the diamond is certified by the central government-run Indian Diamond Institute (IDI), Surat. The yellowish grey stone is 48 mm high, 32 mm wide and 20 mm thick and weighs in at 36.50 grams.

At the rough diamond end of the market, in which miners sell to diamondaires, industry-watchers are talking about even greater falls as people pay less for jewelry and diamondaires find it harder to borrow cash to buy gems.

London Diamond Dealer Graff Invests in Gem Mining

In this time of corporate consolidation there is always those who are brave enough to grow and develop, strengthening their position rather than cutting back and becoming more vulnerable to market forces. Graff, one o f the leading diamond dealers in the UK this week made a significant investment (4.5%) in Gem Mining. The following story was reported in MiningWeekly

Graff bought 2,824,744 shares in Gem Diamonds as an investment and confirmed that he did not intend to make a formal offer for the company, the report said.

“Graff intends to be a long-term investor,” Gem Diamonds said in a statement distributed by London’s Regulatory News Service.

In 2006, Graff acquired the 603 carat Lesotho Promise, which is the world’s fifteenth-largest diamond ever found; and in 2007, he bought the 493 carat Letseng Legacy, the world’s eighteenth-largest diamond ever mined. Both diamonds came from Gem Diamonds’ Letseng mine, in Lesotho.

Our investment in the company reflects our confidence in its fundamental value and in the management’s ability to realize this value for shareholders from its asset base. Botswana increasing its diamond production

Firestone Diamonds, has said it hopes to fast track the development of mines near Orapa and Tsabong in Botswana, Sunday Standard reported.

The diamond mining company said there has been “significant progress made in the scoping study,” adding that mine development may be advanced from the fourth quarter of 2009 to the first quarter, paving the way for commencement of production in the next two years.

“Our primary focus in the coming months is to complete evaluation work on
BK11 as soon as possible, with the objective of accelerating a mine development decision to early 2009,” Philip Kenny, CEO of Firestone diamonds said in an update.

Update on my Wife’s Christmas Gift
