Thailand Becoming a Major Diamond Player

It seems Thailand could be trying to become one of the worlds leading countries exporting diamonds to the world.  The Thai Ministry of Commerce announced this week that exports for July 2008 increased by 44% to $17 billion and imports rose by 55% to $18 billion.

When including all types, the Thai gem and jewelry industry reportedly recorded a whacking 197% increase in exports.  Thailand is not usually known for export of quality gems and jewelry, typically focusing on the lower cost and high volume sales however these statisicts are clearly proving the Thai strategy of moving into the luxury market place…
