One of your friends or relatives has a beautiful new engagement ring and is getting married. This is an exciting time in life. Not only that, you are going to be one of the bridesmaids. If this is your first time, you may have no idea what is expected of you, and it’s best to know what the duties of a bridesmaid are. Here are some of the things you may need to do, to help create a successful wedding event.
Assisting the maid of honor
The maid of honor is usually in charge of all the bridesmaids. If there is to be a bachelorette party, the maid of honor will plan it, and she will probably need your help with some of the details. The same is true for wedding showers. In fact, you may be asked to contribute toward the cost of these events.
There are no hard and fast rules for invitations, but you should at least volunteer your services. This is especially important if it is to be a large event, as several bridesmaids may need to work together to get all of the invitations filled out, and mailed. You also can help the bride design or shop for invitations.
If you have a flair for decorating, your services may be required. This may include favors and decorations for events like the shower and bachelorette party. You could assist the bride by offering suggestions and even help her with the ordering process.
Most brides have a good idea where to have the wedding, but what about the reception? This is often held separate from the wedding and she may need some help finding the best place at the best price.
The bride may ask you to go shopping with her for wedding dresses. At this time, she will probably check out and order dresses for the bridesmaids. Offer your opinion when needed and make sure that all the dresses are ordered and received on time, in case alterations are required.
Bridesmaids usually pay for their own dresses, shoes, and other items. This makes it much easier on the bride’s budget. However, if you have financial difficulties, make sure and talk to the bride or maid of honor ahead of time, to avoid embarrassment.
You may need to create a seating chart for the event. In fact, you can draw out a plan so you’ll know where everyone will sit ahead of time, and make several copies. This will make it easier for bridesmaids to seat guests when they arrive.
The wedding event
Check to see what kind of assistance the bride needs. For example, she may want help with makeup, getting dressed, diamonds, tiaras, and as she may be very nervous or anxious. Check with the best man to make sure that the items like diamond rings are available for the ceremony.
During the wedding and reception be friendly and greet the guests. Try to make everyone feel at ease, so the wedding will be a success. Do not forget to buy the couple a present and if necessary keep track of all the presents, so the bride will have a list for “thank you” notes. Be there for her, and ask what you can do to help.
