Prince WIlliam and Kate Middleton have made it official. The young couple, both 28, were engaged after William proposed in Kenya last October. They will marry next spring or summer.
Out of all the engagement rings he could choose from, the Prince chose what might be the most meaningful to him; he gave Kate his mother’s ring – the same one Prince Charles gave to Princess Diana thirty years ago. The ring features a large sapphire surrounded by sparkling diamonds. William said it was “my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement”.
And what does Miss Middleton think of her new royal role? Regarding her ring, she priased Princess Diana as an “inspirational woman”. She also confessed that it is a “daunting prospect” to join the royal family, but she hoped she would take it all in stride.
The couple met roughly a decade ago when both were students at St. Andrews University. When asked about the length of their relationship and the long time it too
k him to finally pop the question, William responded, “I didn’t realise it was a race, otherwise I probably would have been a lot quicker.” Miss Middleton agreed that the time finally felt right. “We have been going out a long time. We had spoken about our future and it just seemed the natural step for both of us.”
Prince Harry, out for flying training with the RAF, issued a public statement congratulating the couple. “I am delighted that my brother has popped the question. It means I get a sister, which I have always wanted.”
The couple did not reveal details of the proposal itself, except to say that it was romantic and personal. Both shared their excitement and happiness at taking the next step in their relationship and about their future together. The wedding will be held in London next year. Once married, the couple will live in north Wales where Prince William is currently serving with the air force. And as for children? Prince William says they want a family, but will take it “one step at a time”.
