Ever since recorded time, diamonds have captured the imagination of mankind, and it has made its way to the cinema. There have been many excellent movies about legendary stones and here are some of the better ones, to tickle your imagination.
Wherever there are fabulous expensive diamonds, there are extraordinary thieves trying to steal them. Back in the early 1960s, one of the most popular movies was the “Pink Panther” starring the legendary Peter Sellers. As the movie begins, Princess Dala of Lugash receives the Pink Panther diamond (largest in the world) from her father. As an adult, the Princess (played by Claudia Cardinal) is on holiday at a famous ski resort, where the Phantom (played by David Niven) is there to steal the stone.
The movie revolves around the bumbling Inspector Clouseau (whose wife is the Phantom’s lover) and the Phantom. Many people consider this to be one of the all-time classic comedy films of the 60s.
This 1999 movie is about an ex-boxer (Kirk Douglas) that was paid off in diamonds to throw a fight many years ago, and he hid the stones in Las Vegas. He has a strained relationship with his son (Dan Aykroyd) and Aykroyd has a similar problem with his son. During the movie, all three men are brought closer together because of the diamonds.
Diamonds are Forever
Made in 1971, this is the last time you get to see Sean Connery as the famous James Bond, agent 007. After finding out a case of precious stones was stolen directly from mines in South Africa, Bond goes undercover, posing as a diamond smuggler. He then discovers that his arch enemy Ernst Blofeld is stealing diamonds to build a deadly laser, as part of a plot to take over the world. Bond encounters assassins, a beautiful femme fatal, and ends up in Las Vegas, thus proving that the allure and excitement of diamonds is truly forever.
This 2006 story is all about diamonds sold to finance war. The film depicts a great deal of the horrors and atrocities that took place in Sierra Leone during the latter part of the 20th and early part of the 21st Century. In the beginning of the movie a local fisherman is part of a work crew overseen by a ruthless warlord. He finds a huge pink diamond and hides it by burying it in the soft river bank. The warlord finds out about the stone but is interrupted by a skirmish. Later a gunrunner and the fisherman end up in jail together and eventually go looking for the fabulous stone, and embark on an exciting and dangerous adventure.
There are many good movies with loose diamonds as the theme. Perhaps the main reason for so many of these movies is the value that people place on diamonds and the fact that unscrupulous people will do just about anything to posses things of great value and great beauty. Fortunately, you do not have to resort to dishonest tactics to own some amazing diamonds. You only need to visit your online jeweler and check out their fantastic selections.
